A little history...

The Château de Lantheuil, built around 1613 by Antoine Turgot de Saint-Clair, is in the Louis XIII style and has been listed as a Historic Monument since 1931.

The historic rooms contain an exceptional collection of period furniture and portraits, objets d'art and archive documents relating to the various branches of the Turgot family.

The Turgots, of Scandinavian origin, settled in Normandy in 1309.

The tour traces the history of the family, which gave France many servants of the state.

Numerous family portraits and memorabilia illustrate the lives of famous ancestors from the Ancien Régime to the present day, including Marshal Mouton Comte de Lobau, aide-de-camp to Napoleon I, the Second Empire and the sovereign families of France and Austria.

The Second World War did not completely spare the château, which was requisitioned by the German army from 1941 to 1944. Unpublished accounts written by members of the family and witnesses to the period will fascinate historians and enthusiasts alike.

The property still belongs to the Turgots.

Today's ‘à la Française’ garden extends to the south of the château, arranged along the large terrace decorated with Louis XIV balustrades. The pool with its constantly flowing fountain dates from the 17th century. To the north, there are plans to restore and embellish the Italian garden to the west of the main entrance gate.

The 4 Medici vases are surrounded by old roses: Baronne Prevost 1842, Comptesse de Chabrillant 1858, Mme Ernest Calvat 1888, Mme Isaac Pereire 1881, Mme Pierre Oger 1878 and the rose Yolande d'Aragon 1843.

The woods are listed as a historic monument. The driveway leading to the Château is lined with three-hundred-year-old beech trees.
